Woman killed in bear attack in SW Colorado while walking dogs is identified

A 39-year-old woman attacked and killed by bear while she was walking her dogs has been identified.

Laney Malavolta, who lived just north of Durango, died of a penetrating wound to the neck, according to the La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith. The manner of death has been ruled an accident.

Malavolta was walking her dogs Friday night near her home when she was attacked. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers euthanized a female bear and her two yearlings after tracking them with dogs.

The victim’s body was found at about 9 p.m. Friday by her boyfriend, who started searching for her when he got home from work, according to a Colorado Parks and Wildlife news release. He found the two dogs safe at home and called 911 after finding Malavolta’s body off of U.S. 550 near Trimble, north of Durango.

On Sunday night, CPW determined there were human remains inside the stomachs of the mother bear and of one bear cub.
