Victims of North Bergen fatal crash identified
Luis Fernando Cevallos, 24, a native of West New York and 27-year-old woman from Bergenfield have been identified as the two people that died on Wednesday morning when their car slammed into a tractor trailer, shearing off the top half of the vehicle.
The crash happened at about 2:13 a.m. on Tonnelle Avenue at 36th Street according to North Bergen Police Capt. David Dowd said.
The accident occurred when a 2022 Kia Stinger driven by the 24-year-old was traveling south on Tonnelle Avenue at a very high speed before it veered trying to avoid the 2021 Volvo tractor trailer, which was positioned across all four lanes of the roadway to make a early morning delivery to one of the businesses there.
The vehicle then struck the side of the tractor trailer, behind a rear wheel, went under the trailer before resting some 30 to 40 feet past the truck, Dowd said.
The driver of the Kia and his passenger were pronounced dead at the scene while the truck driver, who was inside his vehicle when the crash happened did not sustain injuries.
Similarly, a GoFundMe.com page has been created to raise money for the funeral and memorial costs for Luis Cevallos.
“Luis Fernando Cevallos (24) was a very caring person whose life was cut short due to a tragic car accident on August 4th,” the GoFundMe page description says.
The crash is still under investigation but authorities do not suspect drugs and alcohol to be factors that led o the crash.
Cevallos is survived by his mother Laura, his father Charles, his sister Angelica, and his brother Carlos.
