Victim of Waukegan shooting identified, says Authorities

Waukegan Police authorities have identified the man involved in the shooting that occurred at Waukegan on Thursday26th august 2021.
Officers received a distress call at 6:15pm on Thursday at the 1400 block of Lorraine place in Waukegan.

The officers arrived and met two gunshot victims who were both taken to the hospital for immediate treatment. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the hospital while the other underwent a surgery and is currently in critical state. The victim has been identified by the Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek as 30 year old Martin Reyes Cervantes from North Chicago.

Cervantes and the second victim had been outdoor when the shooter approached them and shot at both of them in what turned out to be a retaliation for an altercation that happened earlier. Cervantes was an unintended victim as the primary target had been the other victim.

With the help of witnesses, the Waukegan police have been able to nab the culprit Michael Betar and he has been charged with a one count of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

During the Saturday bond hearing, Humke asked Lake County Judge Michael Betar to hold Garibay without bond. Garibay had earlier been sentenced to 15 years in 2004, for second degree murder but he served half of his term.

Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart has since expressed sympathy for the families of the victims. “We are praying for the families of both victims and for the full recovery of the injured victim. The State’s Attorney’s Office will dedicate as many ASAs as needed to secure a just outcome in this case.”

A preliminary hearing is slated for September 14th.
