South African Police Service spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the officers responded to Joe Slovo Taxi rank, near Milnerton, Cape Town, at about 9:00 following a deadly shooting at the transport hub.
Police say three dead bodies – aged between 27 and 40 – were located with gunshot wounds.
A fourth person was injured in the shooting, he was taken to the hospital.
“Police have opened murder and attempted murder dockets for investigation,” Potelwa added.
Potelwa said the Taxi Task Team’s preliminary investigations suggest that the shooting incident is related to taxi conflict.
Earlier this year, approximately 82 people, including ordinary citizens and those linked to the taxi industry, were killed in taxi violence in Cape Town and the greater Western Cape. The taxi violence at that time was linked to a route dispute between two prominent taxi associations who were vying for control of the B97 route between Bellville and Mbekweni in Paarl.
“Anyone who has information about the shooting incident is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit tip-offs via My SAPS App,” said Potelwa.
