Terry Teachout Obituary, Death, Cause Of Death – The childhood novel centers on the character of aspiring writer Betsy Ray. As a high school freshman, she also became boyish, seemingly obsessed with every male near her. In the end, most of these boys became “merely” friends. One of them was Herbert Humphreys, who told Betsy everything about his flirting and romance, which Betsy thought was bad for her self-esteem but good for her ambitions. She called Herbert her “confidential friend,” or CF for short, and they formed a lifelong friendship.
Terry Teachout and I have never had a crush on each other, but we have supported each other for over 25 years. He was one of the first serious critics to call me a novelist. I was always there for him when he fell in love. His second wife Hillary passed away in the first few weeks of the pandemic, and we spent the next nine months or so in each other’s DMs a lot, although in the first year of Covid I needed a kind of Very different way of rescue.
Terry died on January 13 at the age of 65. He’s been less demanding of me over the past year, which has never bothered me. He’s found love, theater is back, and his Twitter feed is full of movies and music he’s sharing with his new love.
The last time I saw him was in May 2021. It was a hopeful period that sounded banal. We were vaccinated and I was in New York for the first time in seven months. He’s about to have his first face-to-face meeting with a woman he met through social media, a wonderful combination of beauty and wit, who has sneaked into his DMs and captivated him with her drama knowledge. “Oh Laura,” he said, “I really hope this happens.” I hope it happens to him too. Many men like women. Terry likes them too. It’s a rarer combination than you might think. I was secretly concerned that the woman he found was too good to be true.
But I quickly learned she was too good to be true. If you follow Terry on Twitter, you know her name, but she is a private person and I want to respect her privacy. Once they started meeting regularly IRL, it was an absolute joy to read the movies and music they shared. I was especially happy when I learned she let him watch Paddington 2, which Terry agrees is one of the greatest movies of all time.
Back in February 2021, on the perilous occasion of the first anniversary of Hillary’s death, Terry’s closest friends threw a surprise birthday party via Zoom. Although caught off guard, he spoke persuasively. Uh. Terry was always gushing. At the end of the party, two of his friends played one of his favorite songs, “Som.

I started walking in the morning to cope with the isolation/sedentary life of my pandemic life. I added Tony Bennett’s version of “Some Other Time” to a playlist I created called “Walking” and oh so creative. It sits between Cy Coleman singing “Where am I going?” and Dusty Springfield’s “I just don’t know what to do with myself.” When I tweeted about Coleman’s tune, Terry asked Did you know that Coleman is a regular in “Playboy After Dark”? I didn’t, but, of course, Terry did. Terry knows so much.
I mostly listen to podcasts when I walk, but the other day, I played my walking playlist and thought Terry and — well, we all know the story, right? You think of a friend, you decide to touch the base, and you don’t. Perhaps this is the best reason. He’s happy, he’s in love, and there’s always time to check in.
