Suspect in Springfield officer-involved shooting is dead
Douglas Knackmus Death – Obituary : Authorities say 40-year-old Douglas Knackmus has succumbed to his injuries at the Springfield hospital.
Knackmus was shot by officers on Sunday following a standoff. He was reportedly wanted on several warrants in recent shooting investigations.
Police said 1 p.m. Sunday, An officer approached the suspect at Kum & Go gas station on South Kansas Expressway and College Street.
Knackmus fired several shots at approaching detectives and fled towards Lexington Avenue, an officer was struck to the hand by bullets.
Police said they were informed by a resident in the 1800 block of West Elm Street that a man broke into her home and is holding her husband at hostage.
After that call, at least 25 police and SWAT team cars responded to the situation around South Lexington Street.
SWAT team officers entered the house to find Knackmus fighting with the homeowner over a gun. That is when the officer fired a shot, hitting Knackmus.
The man inside the home did not suffer any injuries.
