Missing Homewood man found dead in Shades Creek

A man reported missing by his family nearly two weeks ago was found dead in Shades Creek.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Joshua Chase Callender. He was 28 and lived in Homewood.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Callender left his home with the family dog on March 27. He was then possibly seen three days later – March 31 – in the 1900 block of South Lakeshore.

On April 6, Yates said, a citizen discovered the family dog and a backpack belonging to Callender at a local nature preserve and returned them to the family. On Wednesday, Homewood police searched the area and found Callender floating in Shades Creek at an I-65 bridge support.

Homewood police Sgt. John Carr said there was no immediately foul play suspected in Callender’s death but said the investigation is ongoing.
