Body Found After Firefighters Put Out Brush Fire In West New York

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ —The Hudson County Prosecutors Office said Wednesday that investigators found the burned remains of a person early in the morning after a brush fire was extinguished behind the West New York Swim Club in that town.

At around 1:25 a.m., members of the West New York Police Department reported a brush fire near the club in the area of 60th Street, JFK Boulevard East, and Anthony M. Defino Way, the Prosecutor’s Office said.

The North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department responded and was able to extinguish the fire.

After the fire was placed under control, investigators found the burned remains of a human who has not been identified.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 4:35 a.m., authorities said.

The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

A joint investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Arson Task Force is actively investigating this case with assistance from the West New York Police Department.
