Juanita “Janie” Esparza owner of a record shop has passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her children. Juanita died at the age of 94, on the eve of her 95th birthday.
Juanita was the daughter of Juan and Petra Gonzales. This couple has been said to give Juanita their 6-year-old girl a record player back in 1933. Little Juanita never stopped listening to music, according to those who knew her.
Fans of Tejano and Conjunto music, as well as artists always go to her store to look for music. Her beloved music store is tagged “San Antonio’s hidden gems” because a variety of good music are been found there.
Janie’s Record shop has been operating for over 36 years but her legacy will be continued by daughter Rebecca Esparza Deleon and son Robert Esparza.
Deleon said “Keeping her legacy going is important to us, and I know she would have wanted us to because this was her love, It needs to continue. People have so much respect for her, and they love her.”

Tributes from friends and loved ones are buzzing all over the internet.
Tejano and conjunto music legend, Linda Escobar, who touted Esparza’s deep musical knowledge, sent her condolence to the family of Juanita saying: “There was not a music question that she couldn’t answer. She knew all the history!”
Longtime friend Maricela Olguin posted on Facebook remembering “hearing a customer giving a few lines of a song, and within seconds [Janie] was able to tell them who sang it, what album it was off [of], and where he could find it.”
