Gary V. Higgins Death;
With great sadness, we announce the death of Gary Higgins on 29th August 2021. in Auckland.
His cause of death has not been released to the public yet.
Gary was a great character of Thames Valley rugby and was also a member of the Fabulous XV that defeated Australia in 1962.
Higgins represented the Thames Valley Third Grade team in two consecutive years 1956 and 1957 and was in the First XV. Gary scored five tries in this series – missing out against the Thames but scoring twice against Te Aroha. He wore No.8 Jersey and is well remembered for his strength and determination and he was a real handful for his opponents.
After all the years of playing Gary stopped rugby from 1963 until 1965 but in 1966 he turned out for the Kerepehi Club and again for Thames Valley. He was part of the team that won the Senior Club Competition for Kerepehi, thus giving Gary his fourth Thames Valley title.
He finished his career at the end of 1967 but has always remained in close contact with his 1962 teammates who all enjoyed his company with lots of wisecracks and good humour.
The Thames Valley Rugby Union offers their sincere sympathy to Gary’s family, friends and all of his teammates who had the privilege of playing with him.
