Martin Thompson Death: Obituary – The legendary artist Martin Thompson a self-taught artist died in Dunedin on Saturday at the age of 65.
Martin Thompson was described as “a once-in-a-generation artist” by Brett McDowell gallery proprietor.
His drawings were carefully constructed, often on A4 or A3 sheets of 1mm spaced graph paper, with repeated patterns devised from formulation he calculated for each bit.
His work grew to be internationally famed after its inclusion within the American Folk Art Museum’s Obsessive Drawings exhibition in 2005.
McDowell stated, “Martin was the hit of the show. He went from the streets of Wellington to being ‘The guy’ in New York.”
Martin Thompson’s drawings have been usually matched with an inverse picture of the identical system derived sample
McDowell also stated, “He frequented Modaks cafe, which, if you squinted, was exactly like Midnight Espresso [in Wellington], so he would’ve felt at home.”
