Manuel was an ex-boxer (Loranca de Tajuña, Guadalajara, 1941). He was the former European and Spanish featherweight champion. During his illustrious career, he had 54 wins -29 of them by KO-, 18 losses and 5 void, his main boxing achievements was when he defeated the Italian Nevio Carbi to take the title of Europe in his division this was in 1968.
Fernandez was largely regarded as one of the golden generation of Spanish boxing together with José Legrá and José Manuel Urtain, among others.
After his retirement, he remained closely linked to the world of boxing, training his son Manuel Calvo Junior, until he made his father proud by winning and managing to emulate the two titles won by his father.
He had a caring heart, generous attitude and a fun-loving personality that laid the foundation for years of lifelong friendships. It didn’t matter what you needed, he would be there to help you celebrate, mourn, fix things, build something or to just listen and offer a shoulder to cry on or smile to laugh with.
