Mansfield man, 59, killed in single-vehicle crash on Ohio 39 when truck overturns
MONROE TOWNSHIP – A Mansfield man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Ohio 39 Monday afternoon, Richland County’s second fatal crash in less than 24 hours.
Gregory D. Mayner, 59, was extricated from a 2013 International 4300 flat-bed truck after it overturned but succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash, which occurred in the 1800 block of Ohio 39, just west of Lucas, at 3:44 p.m., according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.
Mayner had been traveling northwest on the state route. He drove off the right side of the road and struck an embankment, causing the flatbed truck with two dumpsters to overturn, the patrol said in a news release on Monday evening.
The overturned truck and dumpsters bore the logo of Rumpke.
At the scene of the crash, Sgt. Tyler Carr of the patrol could not confirm whether Mayner, who had not yet been identified, indeed worked for the waste and recycling company.
Monroe Township Fire and EMS, Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Richland County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation and Shelly Smith Towing responded to the scene and assisted.
Ohio 39 was closed while officials investigated the crash, which remains under investigation.
Earlier Monday, a 19-year-old Bucyrus woman was killed in a crash at the Interstate 71 northbound entrance ramp from U.S. 30.
