Karen Thomas death – obituary, cause of death : Karen Thomas 7, has died. She passed away during a fire breakout at her home in 700 block Quebec Pl. NW.
Karen a 3rd grader at Raymond Elementary and her friends were said to be indoors of her apartment when a fire started, everybody managed to escape the fire but unfortunately, Karen did not.
DC Police and the fire department responded to an emergency call about a possible fire out break at the second floor of a three-story row home. On arrival the fire fighters went into action and were able put out the fire. But when they carried out a search of the building apartment, they found the body of 7 years old Karen Thomas.
According to DC fire officials, the fire began around 3 p.m. Tuesday on the second floor of a three-story row home. The girl was found inside the home and transported to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries. other children who were also inside the home at the time, were able to get out safely.
Juliet Harris who witnessed the fire, said at first, she didn’t realize the severity of the situation.
“I just heard screaming outside. At first, I thought it was kids playing,” she said. “I came out and saw all the flames bursting out of the house. There were kids across the street, kids over here, families all running around in a bit of chaos.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and the community,” DC Fire and EMS tweeted.
Will Letchinger, another witness to the fire outbreak said his attention will now turn to what he can do to help.
“We’re really just trying to figure out what we can do for them in the very short term, looking to tomorrow and the day after and then what we can do for them in the long term as well,” he said.
