Jolidee Matongo Death – Obituary : 46-year-old Johannesburg Mayor, Jolidee Matongo has died following a fatal accident that took place on Friday, September 18, 2021.
According to report, Matongo who became a mayor on August following the death of Geoff Makhubo, who passed away from Covid-19 complications in July was coming back from a voter registration event in Soweto where he was campaigning for the ANC with President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The crash happened when his car collided with a van as his driver was attempting to dodge a pedestrian that had run onto the street.
The pedestrian and alongside the van driver where also killed in the crash. While Matongo’s two bodyguards are being hospitalized with injuries.
Report from local media has it that Matongo, was the son of a Zimbabwean migrant, and had been a political activist in South Africa from aged 13, campaigning towards apartheid.
Matongo was a member of the governing African Nationwide Congress.
President Ramaphosa has sent his tribute following the death of the Mayor. “It’s exhausting to grasp this tragedy, given the vitality and keenness with which Mayor Matongo interacted with me and residents of Soweto so shortly earlier than his loss of life.
“Nothing might put together any of us for this sudden loss, which has disadvantaged our nation’s financial center of its second government mayor in two months.”
