Madeline’s distinctive features were given as a small brown spot on her left calf, and a dark strip on the iris of her right eye.
Madeleine McCann investigation:
The police launched investigation into the case after an extensive search in the first few days proved fruitless.
During the first stages of the investigation, due to a wrong DNA examination, her parents were listed as suspects in the case as investigators were of the opinion they were responsible for her death and had covered it up.
However, in September 2007, the Portugal’s attorney general archived the case in July 2008 for lack of evidence.
There was also the theory of a sighting in the area that day of a man that was seen carrying a child towards the river.
The case gained so much recognition and awareness and an apology was made to the parents of Madeleine for the mistaken DNA issues.
Madeleine McCann death:
In 2020, she was declared dead by the investigators. A suspect was named in the case which was believed to have murdered Madeleine. The suspect, Christian Brueckner.
The lead investigator in the case, Hans Christian Wolters said “We have re-established contact with the McCann family in writing. We, of course, really consider the fact that it is going to be very hard for the family when we tell them we assume Madeline is dead. But we can’t say why she is dead. It is more important that we are successful and we are able to get the culprit, as opposed to just putting our cards on the table and tell them why we think she might be. We have concrete evidence that our suspect has killed Madeleine.”
The McCann family said in 2020 after this revelation “All we have ever wanted is to find her, uncover the truth, and bring those responsible to justice. We will never give up hope of finding Madeleine alive but whatever the outcome may be, we need to know, as we need to find peace.”
Madeleine’s death was ruled as murder although no body was found to that effect.
