Escambia County shooting – Shots fired in Escambia County

A shooting has been reported outside a home on W La Rua Street around 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

The neighbors say they never heard gunshots, but then they did see a massive police presence.

“I was surprised, I mean absolutely surprised especially this close to home. It’s unexpected,” Bonnie Schubert, W La Rua Street neighbor said.

Sheriff Chip Simmons says it all started with a search for someone else.

“The Gun Crimes Unit was here looking for a homicide suspect,” Simmons said. “While we were here we were talking to and detaining another individual, that’s when the individual reached into his waistband, a struggle ensued and that’s when the shots were fired.”

The person detained, who deputies only identified as a white man in his mid 50’s died.

The deputy was shot in the leg and is expected to be okay.

“I was really sad to hear about that,” Schubert said. “We have a deputy who lives just down the street and that gives us a sense of security in the neighborhood and I’m really surprised.”

Several other people also appeared to be detained, but Sheriff Simmons could not give any details as to why, or which homicide suspect deputies were originally searching for here.

The sheriff’s office is not releasing any more information as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates.
