Driver shot and killed by New Jersey state troopers

Authorities say officials with New Jersey state troopers shot and killed a motorist who they said had opened fire on a dog inside a vehicle that had just crashed, authorities said.

Deputies responded to the Starlite Hill Road Sunday morning and located a vehicle in a ditch with the driver and a dog. Investigators say officials tried to conversate with the driver when authorities said the motorist fired a weapon from the vehicle and fatally struck the dog, prompting the troopers to return fire.

Responding EMS transported the unidentified driver to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Pennsylvania, where he was declared dead.
