Luke Gross Death – Obituary: According to York Maine Police Department, Deputy Luke Gross of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a vehicle that went off the roadway along Route 3 in Trenton this morning. While on scene, he was tragically struck and killed by another vehicle.
The horrible incident happened on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021, on I95 today near Bangor.
Deputy Gross was an 18-year veteran of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.
According to report, first responders are paying tribute by honoring the fallen officer with a police escort.
The Ellsworth American said, “High Street was awash in blue lights this morning as cruisers escorted the body of Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Luke Gross from Trenton to the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta.”

They equally added that, Drivers heading to MDI this morning or leaving the island to drive into Ellsworth should be aware that Route 3 is closed by Portland Glass while the Maine State Police investigate a serious accident. Ellsworth Police officers are diverting traffic at the corner of Buttermilk Road and Beechland Road. Officers say motorists heading to Trenton or MDI should take the Bayside Road to goose Cove Road back onto Route 3
Deputy Luke Gross is at least the 87th Maine law enforcement officer to die in the line of duty since the early 1800s.”
