Deputy Craig Mills, a Butler County deputy, has died of COVID-19 complications. He passed away over the weekend after battling the virus in the hospital leaving family members, loved ones and friends in great grief and fear.

Officials with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday that Deputy Craig Mills died over the weekend of COVID-19 complications after battling the virus.

Mills’ age was not immediately provided. Mills was hired by the Sheriff’s Office in December 2000 and retired in June 2019. He returned several months later to work part-time. Those who knew him say Mills was a talented athlete.

“In his earlier years he played Triple A baseball and he was an amazing fisherman winning many tournaments. Craig was always coaching younger athletes and took them all under his wing, they truly looked up to him,” a statement from the Sheriff’s Office reads in part.

“Craig was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father and was loved by so many. We can’t say enough about Craig, he was always making us laugh and was a real go-getter on the job. We are all truly heartbroken. Please say prayers for his family and his Law Enforcement family.”

According to our source, no cause of death has been declared as investigation is still on-going at the time of gathering this report.
