1 dead, 4 others injured following Highway 101 two-vehicle collision
A 29-year-old Covelo man has been confirmed dead and four others injured following a head-on crash that took place on Sunday morning on Highway 101 in Mendocino County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at about 11 a.m. “north of the Ridgewood Scale Facility, on a stretch of the highway that traverses a sparsely populated area between Ukiah and Willits” .
The crash took place when the male driver of a 2000 Acura Integra travelling north veered off the double yellow lines dividing the lanes and collided with a 2009 Dodge Ram travelling in the other lane.
Both drivers were travelling at speed rate of about 70 mph when the collision occurred. The Dodge struck a guardrail and rolled over, while the Acura stopped on the southbound side of the highway.
The Dodge driver, a 29-year-old Olivehurst woman suffered serious injuries while her three children; ages ages 9, 7 and 4, sustained minor injuries. The four were transported to Adventist Health Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits
The driver of the Acura, a 29-year-old Covelo man was extricated from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Authorities do not suspect drugs or alcohol to be factors in the crash. However, investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing.
