Betty Karnette Death: Obituary – Betty Karnette a former California legislator and longtime Beach resident died on Saturday morning at St. Mary Medical Center at the age of 89.
Karnette is survived by her daughter and a niece. Her husband preceded her in death in 2016. No plans have been decided yet about funeral services.
Betty Karnette was born in Paducah, Kentucky, she was married to Dick her husband and they moved around countries before settling in Long Beach where they nurtured their daughter Mary in the Wrigley neighborhood their home, for about 50 years.
Betty was a middle-school teacher in South Gate. In the early 1990s, she dived into politics and won the election to the California Assembly in 1992.
In 1996, Betty was elected to the California state senate and served till 2004.
Congressman Lowenthal said, “Other than my wife, Betty was my biggest supporter, She encouraged me to run for every office I’ve held. She was my pal. When we were both in office we always tried to sit together on the plane between Sacramento and Long Beach. We spoke all the time-argued some, but we were always on the same side.”
