Afternoon shooting leaves 1 dead in N.J., authorities say

A shooting Thursday in Newark left one person dead, Essex County authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 12:15 p.m. near Avon and Seymour avenues, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly, of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The victim, whose name was not released, died at the scene around 12:45 p.m., according to Fennelly.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force was investigating. More information was not immediately available.

Newark has reported 22 murders this year compared to 15 through the same time last year in the state’s largest city, according to police statistics updated Sunday.
