A three-vehicle crash has occurred close to the junction of the M7 and M8 motorways on Monday, around 7:15pm.
The incident took the life of an 80-year-old man and injured several others.
The reason for the accident and how it occurred is still unclear at the moment.
According to the troopers, the driver of the first vehicle was transported to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the second vehicle, a man in his 40s, was badly injured and moved to UHL along with a female passenger, also in her 40s.
The male driver, a female and a male passengers from the third vehicle were moved to Cork University Hospital with minor injuries.
The M7 westbound was closed between Junction 18 Portlaoise West and Junction 19 at the M8 merge and diversions are in place. The road is free at the moment.
